Faculty Guide to the Library

This library guide provides helpful information for NEIU Faculty.

Journal and database cancellations for FY2020

NEIU librarians strive to be good stewards of our financial resources. Due to an annual inflation rate of 5-7% for scholarly journal subscriptions, the Library faces a budget shortfall every year. We often have to make tough decisions about cancelling subscriptions, but we always do this using evidence-based practices, hoping to create the least negative impact on the NEIU community. Yet, through the cancellation of some lesser-used but expensive resources, for example, we have also managed to actually create access to a greater number of journals through less expensive database aggregations.

  • Like all units of the University, the Library was asked to make a 6% cut in expenditures this year: that equals $170,000
  • The 6% cut comes on top of the journal inflation shortfall we are already facing.
  • We are meeting this cut by cancelling two publisher "big deal" journal packages: Sage and Wiley.
  • These changes will be implemented on January 1, 2020.
  • We arrived at this decision by looking closely at the level of use in all our journal collections and analyzing cost-per-use.
  • Instead of the "big deal" subscriptions, we will subscribe individually to specific Sage and Wiley journals that are heavily used on campus.
  • WorldShare Interlibrary Loan can be used to fulfill any requests that cannot be met by the above actions.
  • These changes do not affect any other scholarly publishers or journal subscriptions.
Beginning on January 1, 2020, the Library will subscribe to SAGE's:
and a handful of remaining high-use journal titles, based on the last two years of usage data.

On January 1, 2020 we will move to "Option 2" of the Wiley Article Select model. Users will need to confirm they want the library to pay to provide them immediate access to specific articles. We will also subscribe to fifteen high-use Wiley journal titles individually.
