Request Library Instruction

Library instruction sessions support your course curriculum and prepare students for research-based assignments, in coordination with the Library's Information Literacy Plan. Face-to-face or online library instruction can range from individual research consultations with students to an in-class lecture and workshop.

Librarians are available for:

one-on-one research consultations via Google Meet, chat or email
course-related library instruction sessions, either real-time or recorded
course embedding in D2L
in-person instruction sessions, if needed

Please complete the NEIU Libraries Instruction Request Intake Form to arrange a session for your class.

Please note: A two-week advance notice is greatly appreciated (and necessary) to best accommodate instruction requests, especially if you would like a recording. Please take that into consideration when planning library instruction.

The Textbook Issue

The library will purchase textbooks or course readings by faculty request to be placed on reserve at the Circulation Desk.

Library purchased reserve textbooks will have a reserve period of two hours (for use in the Library only).
The library may not be able to purchase every textbook requested.
A new copy will not be purchased if the item is in the existing library collection or is already available on reserve as a personal copy.

You can also put personal copies of the books on Course Reserve at the Library. This allows your students to check the books out for a short time period, for example from two hours to overnight, so multiple students can have access to the materials.

Finally, familiarize yourself with the Open Educational Resources movement. These digital resources include course readings, multimedia tools, and even textbooks that can be repackaged and used in your own courses. Learn more and find resources at:

If you require your students to purchase the course textbook, please be sure to order it with plenty of time before the semester begins, and check to make sure the campus bookstore has your text in stock before you start the course reading assignments.

Resources for NEIU faculty

Eigenfactor
Eigenfactor is a free online resource that calculates the importance of a given journal to its community of users, as well as the likelihood that an article published in that journal will make a significant impact on later research. The scores may initially be difficult to interpret, but once that hurdle is cleared, this is a powerful measure of journal impact.
"Publish or Perish"
"Publish or Perish" is an app for Windows or Mac users that will generate statistics using citation analysis: if you enter the name of an author (e.g., your own name) or a journal, it will use Google Scholar's index to return extensive statistics about that author's work or the journal you named, and how frequently it's cited, including Hirsch's h-index, Egghe's g-index, the contemporary h-index, the age-weighted citation rate, and two variations of individual h-indices. It's designed to help you advocate for yourself regarding the impact of your published work, especially if you often publish in journals that are not included in an index like Eigenfactor's. WorldCat Discovery
This is an NEIU-specific interface for searching OCLC's WorldCat, a catalog that unifies thousands of libraries from across the country and around the world. It's ideal for searching out books rare or obscure enough that they cannot be found in our 90+ member I-Share network here in Illinois.
