Database of Cross-Linguistic Colexifications

The Grambank database currently covers 2,467 language varieties, capturing a wide range of grammatical phenomena in 195 features, from word order to verbal tense, nominal plurals, and many other well-studied comparative linguistic variables.

Based at the University of Pennsylvania, the Linguistic Data Consortium (LDC) is a leading repository of linguistic data and corpora for research purposes. While some corpora are only available to the consortium’s member institutions, most can be distributed to nonmembers for a license fee. Undergraduate and graduate students may be interested in LDC’s data scholarships, which provide no-cost access to data. The “language resources” tab contains links to free, open-source annotation tools developed by LDC. Additionally, the website is rich in information about linguistic data management. While most of this information is specific to LDC’s practices, it is instructive as an illustration of an exemplary data center.

The Open Language Archives Community (OLAC) is an international partnership of about 60 different member institutions, each of which holds language data or information in some form. Through the University of Pennsylvania Libraries, OLAC operates a union catalog providing access to resources from all of these institutions. The available data include textual materials, audio, video, pedagogical works like dictionaries, and software. It is possible to filter results by archive, language, discourse type, and format. Notably, results can also be filtered according to whether the material is available online.
