Welcome! This webpage showcases the work of the Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU) Heterodox Academy (HxA) campus community. We are an organization of NEIU faculty, students, and community members devoted to open inquiry, viewpoint diversity, and constructive disagreement at Northeastern Illinois University.
Our umbrella organization, Heterodox Academy, is an international membership group of over 5,000 university faculty, staff, and students from every discipline who are determined to promote intellectual curiosity. HxA was founded in 2015 by social psychologist Jonathan Haidt, sociologist Chris Martin, and legal scholar Nicholas Rosenkranz, in reaction to their shared recognition of the negative impact that a lack of ideological diversity has had on the quality of research within their disciplines.
We established HxA’s NEIU campus community in 2024. It is the first HxA campus community at a Hispanic Serving Institution. Our members take special pride in fostering student engagement in all our programs, which center on what we call the “three Cs":
Convening: We curate intellectual discussions in which students get the opportunity to engage leading scholars representing distinct viewpoints on critical, contested academic and civic questions.
Curriculum: We develop lesson plans and teaching materials aimed at helping students cultivate “viewpoint literacy”—or an understanding of how scholars from differing ideological/intellectual traditions approach and interpret key issues.
Community: We collaborate with other educational and civic organizations, including Chicago-area high schools, who share the values and approaches described above.
Please explore this webpage to learn about the work that we are doing at NEIU’s HxA campus community. And, if you are an NEIU student, faculty member, staff member, or alum, please reach out to Ed Remus or Josh Salzmann to learn more about how to become a part of our campus community and bring your ideas and initiatives to our work. We would also be delighted if you were to attend one of our online or in-person events and, even better, if you were to ask a question and contribute to the conversation.
Sincerely,
Edward Remus and Joshua Salzmann, co-chairs of NEIU HxA Campus Community
